Great Expectations' Abel Magwitch

Magwitch, on the run from the law, had just escaped from the police ship and ended up running into Pip. Pip was frightened early on in the book by a Mr. Abel Magwitch. Magwitch made quite a first impression on Pip in the cemetery. "The man, after looking at me for a moment, turned me upside down, and emptied my pockets. There was nothing in them but a piece of bread." Magwitch convinced Pip to go and find him help and food, but after being discovered, he confessed to stealing the things himself. Despite their first frightening experience, Pip still makes an impression on Magwitch through his kindheartedness.

After being sent to Australia, Magwitch made himself quite the rich man as a sheep farmer. Because of that profound impression Pip had made upon Magwitch, he hired a lawyer, Jaggers, to funnel money from himself to Pip. Magwitch did not intend on Pip knowing who the money was coming from but at some point became lonely and wanted to visit Pip in disguise. Upon his return, Compeyson, the man responsible for his first run in with the law which coincidentally gave way to Magwitch’s and Pip’s meeting, found out about his return and intended to lead the police to him. During Magwitch’s attempted escape from the country, the police caught up with Magwitch’s boat. At that point, Magwitch and Compeyson got into a bit of a fight and ended up in the water. As a result, Compeyson drowned and Magwitch was captured. He was charged and sentenced to death. All of his money was given to the crown and therefore away from Pip as well. He was sentenced, but died in Pip’s arms before he could be hung. Also, just before dieing, Magwitch told Pip of the daughter he once had and in return Pip informed him that Estella was well and rich. Upon hearing this, Magwitch was happy and then passed
