Magwitch, on
the run from the law, had just escaped from the police ship and ended up running into Pip. Pip was frightened early on in
the book by a Mr. Abel Magwitch. Magwitch made quite a first impression on Pip in the cemetery. "The
man, after looking at me for a moment, turned me upside down, and emptied my pockets. There was nothing in them but a piece

his return and intended to lead the police to him. During Magwitch’s attempted escape from the country, the police caught
up with Magwitch’s boat. At that point, Magwitch and Compeyson got into a bit of a fight and ended up in the water.
As a result, Compeyson drowned and Magwitch was captured. He was charged and sentenced to death. All of his money was given
to the crown and therefore away from Pip as well. He was sentenced, but died in Pip’s arms before he could be hung.
